Did you know that over 40 million Americans used teeth whiteners in 2018? This shows that a large number of people are not happy with the color of their teeth and want to improve their smiles.
But how can you do it? There are tons of different types of toothpaste and products that claim to whiten your teeth.
If you want the best results, then porcelain veneers are the best option. However, they are not for everyone. In this short guide, we’ll tell you all about dental veneers and how you can get a whiter smile for up to 20 years.
What Are Dental Veneers?
To start with, what are teeth veneers? In simple terms, they are customizable covers for the front of your teeth. More technically, they are shells made of resin or porcelain that will cover your teeth to improve the color and shape.
This is a purely aesthetic option and is therefore considered cosmetic surgery. They are most often used to make your teeth look whiter. They can also be used to cover up any defects such as chips or stains on certain teeth, which is definitely a better option than total tooth replacement.
How Do They Work?
Before you jump at the chance to get whiter teeth, it is important to understand the process. It is not simply a sticker that goes on the front of your teeth.
Since the veneers are not paper thin, you don’t want your teeth to look even thicker. To prevent this, the dentist or cosmetic surgeon will actually remove about 0.5mm from the front of each tooth that will get a veneer!
That does not sound pleasant for most people, but don’t worry. There should not be any pain during the process. The entire area is covered in Novocaine first, so you shouldn’t experience much discomfort during the procedure.
After the surface of the tooth has been removed, your dentist will make a mold of your teeth to create the veneers. It takes a little time to make the perfect veneers, but you should get some trial veneers in the meantime. These are temporarily attached to your teeth so you can see approximately how they work.
Once the porcelain veneers are ready, the cosmetic dentist will use a special kind of cement to attach them to the front of each tooth.
This is not permanent, but on average, porcelain veneers will last for 10-15 years. Many people have them for up to 20 years.
How Much Do They Cost?
There are actually two kinds of dental veneers. Composite veneers are cheaper at about $250 a tooth, but will only last 5 years or so before needing to be replaced.
Porcelain veneers are the better option but are a much more complicated process since you need a fitting, molds made, removal of the surface, etc. The result is more customized, will look better, and last much longer but will usually cost at least $1000 per tooth.
